There are two major types of dances; Scottish country dance forms a group of couples in two lines or in a square, while Highland dance (Highland: Northern Scotland) is a solo form of dance. Dancers wear titan-check kilt as a formal wear and dance to traditional Scottish music played by bagpipe.
Competitions of Highland dance are organized regularly in Scotland and whilst the majority of dancers now entered into these competitions are female, dating back to the 11th or the 12th century, the Highland Dances tended to be highly athletic male celebratory dances or triumph or joy, or warrior dances performed over swords and spiked shields.
According to tradition, the old kings and chiefs used the Highland dance as a means to select their best men at arms, and the discipline required to perform the dance allowed men to demonstrate their strength, stamina and agility.

Impression of Scottish Dance (by flamenco dancer)
I had a muscle pain in my calves after the lesson. It was a fresh experience but since I vary jump when I dance flamenco, I felt like resting on a floor once in a while.
I knew little about the dance and kilt before the lesson. When I heard that since Scotland often fought with neighboring countries and the dance had strong connection with the battle, I realized that knowing the dance is also about learning the history of the country. It should be nice to dance with live performance of the bagpipe.
